& A Day of Independence--Free Me from the Oppression of House Possession

Happy 4th of July to all my American friends and everyone else!  I wish I could be celebrating back home with friend, family, fireworks and macaroni salad.  And  who was to bring the Swedish Fruit Salad.

Alas, I'm chained to the Old World and hankering for the New World.  Starting to think about buying a cemetery plot.

No party this year, but will be having our own barbecue.  I would be baking, but no.  The wiring and oven are absolutely F+%ked this year.  As you know, the boiler has packed it in and now it seems that the fishy smell I have been smelling in the kitchen for the past 3 months is not the fish I baked 3 years ago (those of you who know me know I don't cook fish, but would like to start), but is the electric wires going haywire.  Would be no problem at all, just call an electrician and fork out 3,000 on a new boiler, except we don't have a red, white, or blue cent at the moment.

Himself and son are cleaning the Velux windows in the kitchen to let in all the beautiful sunshine that we have been enjoying (let's not jinx it now).  I've cleaned the patio door windows of cobwebs and dog scratching.

Enjoy some pictures from last year's party.

i'm sorry you miss your homeland! sweltering hot here in the twin cities, dewpoint up in the 70s. the air is thick. here in como park the annual Hmong Soccer tournamnet is going on, so our neighborhood is crammed with cars--parked cars, cars trolling past looking for a space--and hmong strolling by on their way to or from the soccer game. many carry umbrellas to ward off the hot hot sun.

every now and then a firecracker goes off, and riley skitters over to my side, quaking.

the little kids across the street have set up a lemonade stand: 50 cents a glass, free refills, tips appreciated. little capitalists.

the twins are playing, trying to battle back from a 7-1 deficit against tampa (right now it is 7-3).

down on harriet island, Taste of Minnesota is in full swing. you can almost hear Sammy Hagar from our front steps.

and there you have it---your own taste of minnesota, on the fourth of july.

Houses are a pain. Better to rent. We don't, and the whole place could do with stuff done to it. Sigh.

Ah Laurie, you're so kind and thoughtful. Thanks so so so much for that little taste of home. The tears are welling up in my eyes.

And Mwa-

Gettin' pretty close to having baby #3. I'm thinkin' a way to celebrate would be to have a nice Belgian beer (or 5) with you and some frites!
